Overheden waarmee we goede banden hadden en waar we op konden vertrouwen, laten nu ineens een andere kant zien. Overheden waarover we ons zorgen maken: kunnen zij aan onze data komen, of zelfs onze systemen afsluiten? Wat een half jaar geleden nog ondenkbaar was, is nu realiteit. Governments with which we had good ties and on which we could rely are now suddenly showing a different side. Governments that we are concerned about: can they get our data, or even shut down our systems? What was unthinkable six months ago is now reality.
Is er een Europees alternatief? Is there a European alternative?
We maken ons zorgen over wie toegang heeft tot onze data, maar hebben daar vaak weinig invloed op. In Europa hebben we een democratisch proces dat — vind ik — redelijk werkt. Buiten Europa hebben we die invloed nauwelijks. Hoe gaaf zou het zijn als we een dataplatform kunnen bouwen dat volledig onder Europese regels valt? We worry about who has access to our data, but often have little influence on it. In Europe we have a democratic process which — I think — works reasonably well. Outside Europe, we hardly have that influence. How cool would it be if we could build a data platform that is fully subject to European rules?
Tijdens een hoorzitting over digitale soevereiniteit werd duidelijk dat zelfs grote internationale spelers als Microsoft geen garanties kunnen geven dat data van Europese burgers niet zonder toestemming gedeeld worden met buitenlandse overheden. Dat is zorgwekkend. During a hearing on digital sovereignty, it became clear that even large international players such as Microsoft cannot guarantee that data of European citizens will not be shared with foreign governments without permission. That is worrying.
We zien de inmening in de praktijk zelfs al gebeuren: het emailaccount van de hoofdaanklager van het strafhof, Karim Khan, in Den Haag is afgesloten, vermoedelijk omdat de VS het ICC sancties oplegt. We can even see the opinion happening in practice: the email account of the chief prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan, in The Hague has been shut down, presumably because the US imposes sanctions on the ICC.
Hoe betrouwbaar zijn onze banden en contracten met de grote tech bedrijven in Amerika dan nog? In de media komt onze Europese bescheidenheid vaak naar voren. In Amerika is alles beter, het land van de dromen, etc. Maar ik denk dat wij een stuk 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 bescheiden hoeven te zijn. How reliable are our ties and contracts with the big tech companies in America? Our European modesty is often highlighted in the media. In America everything is better, the land of dreams, etc. But I think we need to be a lot less modest.
