De meeste bedrijven maken op dit moment voor Business Intelligence en Data en Analytics gebruik van bijvoorbeeld Power BI, Cognos, Tableau, Qlik of Looker. Vanwege stijgende licentiekosten, vendor lock-in en toenemende druk op datasoevereiniteit zijn steeds meer bedrijven op zoek naar een alternatief wat Europees of Open Source is. In deze blog vergelijken we het Open Source product Apache Superset en het Zwitserse pakket icCube. Wil je het verschil in de praktijk ervaren plan dan vooral een afspraak met me. Conclusie Conclusion
Apache Superset is een toegankelijke open-source tool om mee te werken, maar voor geavanceerde analyses vereist het wel kennis van SQL. Het is geen Enterprise BI pakket. Het ontbreekt binnen Superset namelijk aan de mogelijkheid om een compleet centraal datamodel te maken. De datasets bieden die functionaliteit onvoldoende waardoor je veel datasets zal moeten maken om de grafieken weer te geven die je nodig hebt. Op korte termijn lijkt dat werkbaar. Op lange termijn zal dat veel beheer nodig hebben en zal het lastig worden de informatie terug te vinden. Ook kan de weergave van de dashboards en grafieken niet in mappen onderverdeeld worden. Daardoor raak je al snel het overzicht kwijt. Al met al een prima tool om wat grafieken mee te maken, maar niet geschikt als Enterprise BI oplossing. Apache Superset is an accessible open-source tool to work with, but for advanced analyses it does require knowledge of SQL. It is not an Enterprise BI package. Superset lacks the ability to create a complete central data model. The datasets do not sufficiently provide this functionality, meaning you will need to create many datasets to display the charts you need. In the short term, this seems workable. In the long term, it will require a lot of maintenance and it will become difficult to find the information you need. Additionally, the display of dashboards and charts cannot be organized into folders, causing you to quickly lose overview. All in all, a fine tool for creating some charts, but not suitable as an Enterprise BI solution.
icCube is veel completer en op veel vlakken gebruiksvriendelijker dan Superset. Ik vind icCube een serieuze uitdager van Power BI en Cognos. icCube beschikt over een dimensioneel model, vergelijkbaar met het semantische model van Power BI, maar dan beter, en vergelijkbaar met de Frameworks en cubes van Cognos. De interface van icCube is intuïtief en biedt daarnaast veel mogelijkheden tot aanpassing. icCube kan met veel databases connectie maken en is als het om security gaat veel uitgebreider dan Superset. Vooral wanneer je waarde hecht aan governance, datamodellering en security is icCube een logischere keuze dan Superset. icCube is much more complete and in many respects more user-friendly than Superset. I consider icCube a serious challenger to Power BI and Cognos. icCube has a dimensional model, comparable to the semantic model of Power BI but better, and comparable to the Frameworks and cubes of Cognos. The interface of icCube is intuitive and also offers many customization options. icCube can connect to many databases and is much more comprehensive than Superset when it comes to security. Especially when you value governance, data modeling and security, icCube is a more logical choice than Superset.
